the stately, dimly lit front bar boasts red walls, dignified paintings, comfy couches and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. cement floors and a high a-frame ceiling don't detract from the cozy romance offered by a central patio fireplace. One wall flickers with inset candles; iron sconces line the other. servers are prompt, informed and exceptionally attentive.

high ceilings and large wood-framed windows--lined with lofted banquettes--create an airier pub vibe than their cozy counterparts across the pond. an exhibition kitchen and central bar island add to the bustle, as do the friendly, hip servers gliding from table to table. the otherwise bare-brick walls feature shocking blown-up images snapped during 1993's london riot. it's nice to find a place that has good food, a fun crowd and is actually affordable--most entrees are in the teens. it is loud, so this might not be the best place for a cozy date, but it's great for groups

cafe 50's is smartly attired in red vinyl, white formica and chrome. the walls are plastered with b-movie posters and ads of a bygone era, and a quarter buys three tunes on the 1957 jukebox. sizzling burgers and crispy fries are standards, and the soda fountain is unparalleled, replete with favorites like egg creams and vanilla cokes. have a norman rockwell moment sipping any one of the three dozen super-thick malts and milk shakes.

set inside the flat, an edgy residential redesign of a holiday inn, this sceney indoor/outdoor spot features two dining rooms, three lounges and a poolside area with its own fire pit. walls of glass and stones, sultry lighting, city views and sexy rock classics set the mood for the high-energy mix of hollywood producers, loft dwellers, eastside yuppies and adventurous foodies who descend on the space, especially late night. the menu creatively combines french technique with compelling california cuisine.

without a doubt, this supper club is an art deco/nouveau-style knockout with a touch of '70s glam rock thrown in for good measure. stained glass, marble tables and plush armchairs set the scene for the crowd of pimped and primped trendoids and clubbing celebutantes. while everyone else is looking over their shoulders. once dinner is done and the lipstick has been reapplied, night owls make their way upstairs to the equally posh nightclub--that is, if they can get in.

sur restaurant in los angeles has exquisite food, fabulous atmosphere and great staff. sur restaurant is located on robertson blvd in between melrose & santa monica just north of la's trendiest shopping. known for their sexy, southern european ambiance and cuisine. a dramatic refurbishment has nearly doubled the space of this exotic haunt that's been a favorite of celebrities. the sidewalk patio's rustic romance combines vines, ferns, white linen and candles. inside, a giant statue of shiva is joined by a dazzling display of global antiques, chandeliers, velvet, flowers and incense.
